How do you care for your new piercing after you get it?

Our attitudes towards piercings and how we take care of them are vastly different now than when we were children. To properly care for a new piercing, just as you would for any other new thing, attention and love are necessary. After care for piercings is fraught with misconceptions. Different experts recommend different techniques when it comes to piercing because there is no exact science.

The following suggestions will provide you with guidelines for caring for your new piercing. Based on our years of experience as professional piercers, as well as the advice of medical professionals familiar with the care of piercings, these recommendations have been developed.

Tips for taking care of your New Piercing

• Avoid touching your piercings

Fresh piercings should never be touched with dirty hands. The vast majority of people do not realize how simple it is to touch a door handle and then your fresh wound (piercing), potentially introducing germs to that area. The healing piercing must be extremely careful not to be touched. Only when cleaning your piercings should you touch your piercings. After washing your hands, you should then apply your piercing cleaner.

• A healing regimen can help

Hold the gauze pad on the piercing site for 10-15 minutes after wetting it with saline solution, but do not soak it. If there are any dried crusts, this will soften and moisten them. Use an antibiotic ointment, such as Bacitracin, after clotting the wound with petroleum jelly. In addition to helping create a better healing environment, ointments are also beneficial for improving healing. Ointments prevent crust formation and allow liquid growth factors to move freely.

• Jewellery should not be removed

If jewelry is removed from new piercings, they may shrink in size, making getting jewelry back in pain or impossible. There is an old piercing myth that suggests you should turn your earring around to help it heal. Turning these studs could allow after-care products to get into the tunnel inside the piercing, as they were tightly pressed against the ear. There is no reason to believe that the skin will stick to a metal stud, which is why you should allow the body to naturally form the skin cells of the piercing tunnel without twisting or touching them.

• Soak in warm sea salt water (saline) every morning and every evening

It feels good and prevents infection, reduces scarring, and speeds your piercing healing when you soak it in an ultra-gentle sea salt solution. Always wash your hands before touching your piercing, and keep your jewelry in at all times!

Seeing your doctor if you suspect that the piercing is infected is the best course of action. It's that easy. Infections can cause pain, red streaking in the area around the piercing, swelling, increasing redness, or fever. Patients with new piercings should seek medical attention if they experience any of these things. Redness, tenderness, swelling, and discharge are normal in the early stages of body art, but you should consult your doctor if redness, tenderness, swelling, rash, unusual drainage, or a fever occurs within 24 hours of the procedure.
